What’s viscosity?
Viscosity measures how much motor oil can resist flow. In other words, if you tip a motor oil bottle over, how fast it spills out indicates its viscosity. The slower it flows, the more viscous the motor oil.
To indicate viscosity, the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) developed a standard scale:
0W is thinnest (“W” stands for winter and is the viscosity rating when the motor oil is cold)
5W
10W
15W
20W
For example, 10W-30 means the viscosity is at 10W when the engine is cold and 30 when the engine is hot.
It’s important to know which grade of motor oil is recommended for your vehicle. Your vehicle’s recommended oil type should be listed in your owner’s manual or on the oil cap. If you can’t find it, don’t worry, a Driven Auto Repair associate can look up which oil is recommended for your vehicle.
